Our Classes

Urban Kiz

What is this dance style?

Urban Kiz is a dance that finds its origin in the Angolan couple dance Kizomba. The meaning of the word ‘Kizomba’ is ‘party’. It is a dance with round patterns and a focus on continuous walking and connection. Throughout the years, Kizomba started mixing with different styles of music and dance like Afro, Hip Hop and Latin dances, such as Tango. Out of this mixture, Urban Kiz was born. In Urban Kiz, we are more free to interpret the music in our own ways, using changing tempos in our dancing, our stops, and our body movements. Urban Kiz at Generation Kiz is based on freedom of expression and on equality between followers and leaders.

At Generation Kiz we will focus on expression through connection, technique, and musicality. In our Urban Kiz classes, we learn to feel the music and express ourselves in our own unique way through dance. We will teach you more than just combinations of steps or moves. We will give you the technical guidelines needed to understand your dance partner and to communicate through movement. We will give you the tools to create your own style of dancing and to be able to adapt to all the different dancers and styles on the dance floor. Urban Kiz is about communication, about building a story together. Our dance classes fully focus on learning a style of Urban Kiz where we are free in our expression and where both followers and leaders add to the stories we create.

Availability

For everyone who is new to Urban Kiz, every 8 weeks we will start with a new Beginners 1 course. During the first week you can come for a try-out class. If you decide to sign up, in 8 weeks you will be taken through all of your first steps of Urban Kiz.

For everyone that already has experience in Urban Kiz or Kizomba you can contact us for a level check. After the level check you can start at any moment during the month in the level that we see fit.

Tarraxo

What is this dance style?

Tarraxo finds its origin in the Angolan couple dances of Tarraxa & Tarraxinha. While Tarraxa and Tarraxinha are based on groundedness, hip movements, and small steps in close position, the creators of Tarraxo added upper body movements, self-expression and bigger steps to the dance in order to make the movements fit better to the evolving music. Original Tarraxo music is characterized by a lot of percussive elements and heavy beats. While original Tarraxo music is often perceived as wild and dark, new, softer subgenres have been emerging for a few years now.

In our dance classes, we focus on building a strong technical foundation in our Tarraxo. Since Tarraxo is a constantly evolving dance, we believe that having a strong base will allow our students to lead and/or follow Tarraxo dancers from all over the world. To make our students grow as dancers, we also focus on concepts like musicality, creativity and expression. You will learn about groundedness and Tarraxo energy, while always respecting that Tarraxo is a connection-based couple dance that comes to life through the communication between two people as a couple. Together we will work on creating our own styles, while at the same time maintaining the fundamentals of this dance.

Availability

Every 2 months there will be a Tarraxo 1 bootcamp. During this 4 hour bootcamp, you will take your first steps of dancing Tarraxo, creating a foundation for the rest of your Tarraxo journey.
The next Tarraxo 1 bootcamp will be held on February 24th.

For everyone who already has experience dancing Tarraxo, we will have our weekly Tarraxo 2 and Tarraxo 3 classes. You will have to do a level check to be able to join either of these classes. After your level check, you will be able to start following the classes at any given moment during the month.
Tarraxo 2 and 3 are starting again in March!

Douceur

What is this dance style?

Douceur is a sub-style of Urban Kiz and gets a lot of its foundations from Tarraxinha. The literal translation of ‘Douceur’ is sweetness or softness, which also refers to the type of music that Douceur is mostly danced to. Douceur is often referred to as meditation for two. The focus lies on connection, on becoming one with your partner, on reaching a state where we forget what is around us and where we are able to express music and emotions together. A common misconception about Douceur is when people dance Douceur, nothing is happening. Only by experiencing it, one will find that this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Douceur at Generation Kiz means working on the connection with ourselves and with our partner, on musicality, body awareness and micro movements.

Availability

Douceur at Generation Kiz will mostly be taught through open level bootcamps or so-called intensive courses. Keep a close look at our website and/or social media for your next opportunity to dance Douceur with us, or contact us for our upcoming events.

Body Movements

What is this dance style?

Body Movements classes are solo classes focussed on self-expression. We will use different exercises to create body awareness and work on body control. By joining these classes you will become a more expressive, sensitive, creative and versatile dancer – both solo and on the social dance floor.

In our Body Movements classes we will cover topics like body isolations, balance, precision, expression of emotions, flow, spatial awareness and many more! We will also train movements and techniques that you can incorporate in your couple dance, especially (but not only) regarding Urban Kiz, Tarraxo and Douceur. Also, your following and leading technique in your partner dance will benefit from exercises about proprioception, energy, musicality, etc.

Availability

Every Body Movements class will have its own subjects. You are free to join whenever you want to start your journey in solo dancing. We will make sure that each exercise has different options to keep them accessible, but challenging, for dancers of every level. After some time the class subjects will repeat and you should be able to take the next step in our exercises. The repetition will help you improve as a dancer and create even more body awareness.

Kiz 'n Heels

What is this dance style?

The Kiz ‘n Heels course was created to bring more focus to the followers who like to wear their heels during dancing. Walking in heels is different compared to walking in flats, and the same applies to dancing. The goal of this class is to give you the tools on how to use your heels to your advantage, to learn walking techniques and follower’s styling.

In this course, we will be dancing to a choreography that will be completely Urban Kiz-inspired. The full choreography will be filmed during the final class of the course (if you would like to take part, of course). The resulting video allows you to view your own progress.

As this is an Urban Kiz-inspired class, we will be focusing on how we can connect with ourselves, so that we can connect with our partner. Additionally, extra attention will be brought upon technique, musicality, and how we can express ourselves whilst dancing with someone else.

Let’s create a safe and comfortable environment to learn together. A place to explore our insecurities and get out of our comfort zones. Join us for these dance classes here in The Hague.

Explore the Urban Kiz Levels

Do the level check!

Do you have any experience in Kizomba or Urban Kiz? Come by for a level check!

Level checks are important to find the Urban Kiz level that most suits your needs and through which you can best improve your dancing. Besides that, we use level checks to maintain the quality of our dance classes.

During a level check, we will determine your current level of dancing. The level checks take place with one (or multiple) of our teachers. You will be given the chance to show them your knowledge and skills during a dance of about 5-10 minutes. Moments after, the level we believe is right for you will be communicated to you, along with the reasoning.

After your level check, you will be able to register for classes of the level we estimated you to be at.

Beginners 1

The Beginners 1 Urban Kiz course is an 8 week course where we introduce you to the basic principles of Kizomba and Urban Kiz. We will help you make your first steps in concepts such as intentional following and leading, connection, techniques and musicality. During these dance classes you will learn about our 4 basic principles of connection, weight transfers, posture and lines. All the moves that you learn in this course are not just moves: they serve a purpose that is linked to the aforementioned concepts and basic principles.

We will make sure there is an equal focus on both followers and leaders, and you will learn that the learning goals in a class are different, depending on what role you are learning.

Beginners 2

The Beginners 2 course aims to get you comfortable with all the things you’ve learned in the 8 week Beginners 1 course. For this course, you need a basic understanding of the Beginners 1 concepts of techniques, connection and musicality so we can start learning to be playful with them. You will learn how to use all the basic principles to start creating your own style in Urban Kiz and to add playfulness in its basics.

The Beginners 2 course is the first one in the regular Generation Kiz layout where you will remain at the respective level until we believe you are ready for the next step.

Improvers

Improvers has the main goal of learning to understand tempo switches. We will learn about slow motions, accelerations, stops and taps. This is one of the things that differentiates Urban Kiz from Kizomba. In this level, you’ll learn to use these tempo switches in each move and in all parts of your moves, without losing control of your basic principles.

Besides what you know from Beginners 1 and Beginners 2, in this course you will learn new concepts to broaden your vocabulary. You will have to control your tempo switches in all of the old and new concepts. Intentional following and leading are a big part of this level.

In the Improvers course, you will learn about Douceur, one of the substyles you can run into on the dance floor. Besides that, we will take a step back to look at the origin and history of Urban Kiz and relevant music, both theoretically and practically, by focusing on Kizomba and Semba.

Practitioners

Practitioners is focused on taking the next steps in your social dancing. The focus will be on finding your own style, musicality and expression. You will learn how to play with freedom in the dance and how to add your own flavor without disrupting the connection with your dance partner. You will learn how to play and get creative with what you already know from previous levels, and you will learn new concepts that are often used on the social dance floor.

Besides taking the next steps in your Urban Kiz, in the Practitioners classes, we will focus on understanding more of the different styles that we can come across on the dance floor, like Douceur and Tarraxo.

Intermediate

The Intermediate class broadens your vocabulary and improves your ability to adapt to new principles. You will be introduced to more advanced principles and learn how to use or adapt to them at different moments during dancing. At this level, you will learn about concepts such as cross steps, spins and turns, or about how to use Sacade techniques in more advanced ways.

We will work on the continued development of your own style, using all of these new possibilities. Focusing on freedom and equality during dancing (between follower and leader), and on expression through connection and musicality.

Inter/advanced

The Inter/Advanced class is focused on creativity, expression, versatility and adaptability. You will learn to use and adapt to the more advanced concepts of Urban Kiz and how to be playful with them, both as followers and leaders. You will learn to recognize the building blocks of everything you do and learn how to use this to (re)create your own dance. Followers will learn to be active through all of the new concepts, to be able to adapt to anything that they come across on the social dance floor while keeping their fundamentals and their ability to add their own flavor.

Advanced

The goal of the Advanced classes is to creatively use everything you know. Playfulness and versatility are a big part of this level. We have to be able to adapt to the different styles, partners and vibes we come across on the dance floor. You will learn to create dynamics in your dance by being playful with energy, musicality and connection.

Finally, you will learn to critically look at your own dancing and that of others in order to improve yourselves and to help each other grow. During these classes, we will focus on your personal goals and work together on a plan to reach them.

A punch card is valid for 2 months, after which it will expire, invalidating any classes/punches that you have not used yet. Please keep in mind that, to use your punch card, you have to sign up for classes through Bueno.
